The Peak House was much loved as the home to a former commercial client and their family

The Peak House was our first project started under the cloud of the pandemic. Viewing the house for the first time whilst also navigating mask wearing and social distancing gave the team at The Mill a unique experience of the new role our homes would come to play as refuge.

The Peak House was much loved as the home to a former commercial client and their family. On entering into the renovation, the family wanted to take what was a relatively simple floor plan made complicated through the use of angled walls, and kept isolated from the north facing backyard through difficult kitchen placement, and create an open family home that was the perfect setting for entertaining.

With the exception of removing angled walls and replacing them with others that more easily accommodate furniture placement and use of bedrooms, the bulk of the work to this home was reserved for its true heart, the open plan living, dining and kitchen. Removing the old kitchen with its small window and low ceiling allowed for the construction of a new central living space with cathedral ceiling, the first of three peaks that make up the Peak House. A new kitchen, pantry and laundry were built to the south, allowing the dining space to open directly to one of two new outdoor rooms, the second peak. To the east, concealed behind meticulously detailed custom timber battening hides a quiet secret, a place to retreat from the busy family bustle, a library that overlooks the second outdoor room and the final peak.

The final result is a much improved family home that has become the hub of long afternoons spent entertaining, with the house flowing effortlessly to the two outdoor rooms, the pool and garden and the golf course beyond.
